I started looking for valentine’s ideas today. Yes, I realize it’s tomorrow. As I type, it’s actually only an hour away. But any spare time I’ve had lately, I’ve been sewing for my spring line (pictures of those pieces to come). So craft ideas for my kid’s class weren’t on my mind until today. I looked around pinterest and read some blogs. I found a free printable that reads, ”Valentine you are the “write” stuff,” and wrapped it around a holiday pencil. I printed off a valentine sign and punched it out with a 1 1/2″ circle form then wrapped it around a sucker with ribbon left over from Christmas wrapping supplies. Cora giggled the whole time we put it together (see post about her giggle here) and Carter wanted to make sure the boys in his class didn’t get anything pink.
But, that’s not the most fun idea I found today. I saw a Valentine’s poem using candy bar names or anything else that your special someone would like. I typically don’t enjoy this month of love because at some point, my hubby’s industry decides to plan their biggest meeting and conference. ALWAYS. But this idea is perfect for that very reason because I can put together a valentine’s basket of goodies he can take on his trip. I gathered a couple of his favorite candies, snacks, and other cool goodies that just fit with the poem. This is what I wrote:
I put a little number by each word that corresponded to a numbered treat in the basket just in case he didn’t follow my creativity. I just typed this in Word and changed the fonts and colors accordingly. It doesn’t look as cute as the one I saw online. I’m a seamstress, NOT a graphic designer. I found a fun “I LOVE YOU” tag in my underutilized scrapbook supplies and tied it to the top of the Crush drink with string and cute heart ribbon. I fully expect him to keep that ribbon and tag on there as he drinks this at his conference. HA HA

For the “fortunate” part I knew fortune cookies would be the obvious thing to use but I don’t believe in “fortune” and we don’t really like fortune cookies. It’s about the only cookie we don’t eat. So I made a fortune cookie out of some scrap felt I had in my sewing room. I traced around the top of a cup with a red marker so you couldn’t see the line.
I then cut floral wire and glued it down the middle of the circle.
Be sure to cover the wire with a piece of ribbon. I placed red ribbon over the glue and wire while the glue is hot.
Fold the felt in half over the wire and then in half again creating the look of a fortune cookie. I wrote a clever note on the inside for my sweetheart. This part is fun as you can write anything that is appropriate for your loved one. If I had enough scrap felt I would have made them for my kiddos and put them in their lunch box tomorrow. Or a clever idea would be to fill up a jar or box with these homemade fortune cookies filled with special notes, encouragement or scripture for the recepient.
I think the finished basket is so fun. I know he will love it and I hope he will know how special he is to me. He believes in me and in my work, makes me laugh more than anyone else, prays over me, challenges me and he is my best friend. Happy Valentine’s Day, Jason. I love you!
